About Hito Matcha

Our matcha, from tea field to the Netherlands

Hito Matcha is made with Japanese matcha. Matcha is more than green tea in powder form: it starts months before the harvest, in the tea fields of Japan.

Months of growing

In winter the tea bushes rest. In spring they grow their first young, tender leaves, and the best matcha is made from these first leaves of the year.

Three to four weeks in the shade

For the last three to four weeks before the harvest, the bushes are covered with shade cloths. With less sunlight, the leaves make more chlorophyll and keep more of their amino acids, such as L-theanine. That gives matcha its deep green colour and its soft, rich taste with little bitterness.

From leaf to powder

After the harvest, the leaves are steamed within hours so they keep their green colour. Then they are dried, and the stems and veins are removed. What remains is called tencha. Only then is the tencha ground into a very fine, bright green powder: matcha. We choose our matcha for its bright colour, fresh aroma and smooth taste.

Imported into the Netherlands

Our matcha is imported into the Netherlands. From there, Sucre & Co, the company Hito Matcha is part of, distributes it to shops, cafes, online stores and wholesalers in Europe and the United States.

European legislation and certificates

Hito Matcha meets European food legislation. Every batch comes with the required certificates, so shops and wholesalers know exactly what they are selling.

Seven shades of one idea

Matcha changes character with every gram. That idea became 7 Shades of Matcha Chocolate: seven strengths of matcha chocolate in one box, from mild to 25% matcha, so you can taste the difference for yourself.

The name

Hito (人) is the Japanese word for person. Matcha is made by people, one bowl at a time, and is best shared. That is the thought behind our name.
